The process of producing glucose when carbon dioxide and water are present is called photosynthesis. The process of respiration involves the production of carbon dioxide and water as a result of the breakdown of carbohydrates. Differences Between Photosynthesis and Respiration.



In the anabolic process of photosynthesis, a new molecule (glucose) is created.

Respiration is a catabolic mechanism that breaks down the molecule (glucose).

Chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis to take place, much like it does in plants and some algae.

All living things have cells that are capable of respiration.

Within the chloroplast, photosynthesis takes place.

The mitochondria are where most respiration occurs.

It creates oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

This process generates carbon dioxide using oxygen.

Steps in Photosynthesis

  • Water is taken up by the root hairs from the soil during the process of photosynthesis, while carbon dioxide enters through the stomata. Xylem vessels then transport the water to the leaves. Chlorophyll splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen by absorbing the sun’s light energy.
  • In order to make glucose, carbon dioxide from the air and hydrogen from water molecules are combined. Additionally, as a waste product, oxygen is released into the atmosphere through the leaves.
  • While the remainder is stored in the roots, leaves, and fruits for later use, glucose serves as a source of nourishment for plants, giving them the energy they need for growth and development.
  • Other essential biological elements of photosynthesis include pigments. They are the molecules that give color, and they absorb light at a certain wavelength while reflecting back the light that was not absorbed.
  • Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids, which are found in the thylakoids of chloroplasts, are the main components of all green plants. Its main purpose of it is to absorb light energy. The predominant pigment is chlorophyll a.
