High voltage DC (HVDC) transmission is mainly used for bulk power transmission over long distances. Since only two conductors are utilized for transmission in HVDC, the cost of transmission is lower. Reactive power is absent.

Transmission losses are thus decreased. For a given amount of electricity, transmission at high voltage results in a lower current. I2R loss is therefore relatively low.

Horsepower (hp), which is roughly equivalent to 745.7 watts, is a unit of measurement sometimes used to describe the power of motor vehicles and other devices.

Instantaneous: The power available at any given time. The average of all instantaneous powers is equal to the total energy utilised divided by the total time. Therefore, HVDC transmission is preferred for the transfer of large amounts of power across very long distances.
