For healthy eyes, the resolving power limit will be 1’. The limit of the eye is resolved in one minute (1′). The human eye can detect objects that are at a distance of 1 kilometer and 30 centimeters apart to an angular resolution of around 1 arcminute (0.0003 radians or 0.02 degrees ).

Resolving Power Limit of Healthy Eyes

  • The eye detects light waves that are emitted from or reflected off of things.
  • The light rays enter your pupil and focus on your retina by your eye’s lens.
  • Depending on the angle at which the corresponding light beams from two items interact, your pupil size—which is comparable to the camera aperture — finds how well you can distinguish between two objects.
  • The capacity of an optical device or eye to distinguish between two lines or points is known as resolution.
  • The most common way to express it is as a separation angle emanating from the instrument or eye.
  • Simple geometry allows us to find the correlations between viewing lines and distance or point separations when resolving power is given as an angle.

Using Rayleigh’s criteria, it is possible to compute the diffraction limit of the eye:

angular resolution = 1.22 λ/D where λ is the wavelength of light (on average, about 550 nm) and D is the diameter of the eye’s pupil, which is about 5 mm indoors.

  • The angular resolution of this computation is 0.008 degrees.
  • You could see the lines in the printed pattern at a distance of 15 m if your eyes could resolve pictures at the diffraction limit.

Summary:

For a healthy eye, the resolving power limit will be_____. (a) 1′ (b) 1” (c) 1° (d) (1/16)’

The maximum resolving power for eyes in good health is 1′. Within one minute (1′), the limit of the eye is resolved. Because the human eye has an angular resolution of around 1 arcminute, it can distinguish objects that are 30 centimeters apart at a distance of 1 kilometer (0.02 degrees or 0.0003 radians). The eye detects light waves that are emitted from or reflected off of things.
