Chlorophyll is absent in Fungi. The green pigment known as chlorophyll is what traps sunlight during photosynthesis. All autotrophic organisms, including algae, bryophytes, cyanobacteria, and all higher plants, include chlorophyll.

What is chlorophyll?

Since they lack chlorophyll and are heterotrophs, fungi are unable to manufacture their own sustenance. For their feeding needs, fungi rely on other creatures. The majority of fungus are parasitic saprophytes. Algae and fungi combine to form the thalloid structure of a lichen. Both the fungal and algal components of lichen are referred to as mycobionts. Chlorophyll is present in the phycobiant’s non-fungal portion.

Chlorophyll in algae varies depending on the type of algae.

  1. Chl. a, b, present in green algae
  2. Brown algae have Chlorophyll a, c
  3. Red algae have Chlorophyll a, d
  4. Chlorophyll a and b are present in bryophytes.

Any individual belonging to the most significant group of pigments involved in photosynthesis—the process by which light energy is transformed into chemical energy through the production of organic compounds—is referred to as chlorophyll. Almost every photosynthetic creature, including algae, cyanobacteria, and green plants, contains chlorophyll.

These pigments are essential to the process of photosynthesis, which uses light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars while releasing oxygen, which is necessary for life on Earth. The Greek words chloros (green) and phyllon are the sources of the name chlorophyll (leaf).

There is no chlorophyll in fungi. During photosynthesis, the chlorophyll green pigment captures sunlight. Chlorophyll is present in every autotrophic organism, including all higher plants, bryophytes, algae, and cyanobacteria.
