- spectrum of an atom or ion containing one electron only
- the spectrum of hydrogen molecule
- the solar spectrum
Bohr’s model can explain spectrum of an atom or ion containing one electron only. By formulating four postulates, Niel Bohr was able to answer the mystery of hydrogen spectra.
Explain Bohr’s model
- The electrons travel in circular orbits around the nucleus.
- The radius surrounding the orbit has certain unique characteristics. They do not radiate energy in these stationary orbits as predicted by Maxwell’s theories.
- Although the energy of each stationary orbit is constant, electrons can change their orbit by producing a photon of light.
Higher energy orbit minus lower energy orbit equals (h c)/λ.
By absorbing energy, an electron can also transition from one energy level to another.
- An electron’s angular momentum L in stationary orbits is an integral multiple of (h/2).
L = n × (h/2π)
Bohr’s Model was limited in that it could not account for atoms and ions having more than one electron, not even for Helium.
The Bohr model was ineffective because it could not account for the spectra of atoms or ions with two or more electrons. After all, an atom or ion with only one electron, such as H, He+, Li++, Be+++, etc., can employ the Bohrs model…
Summary:-
Bohr’s Model can Explain: 1. the spectrum of hydrogen atom only 2. spectrum of an atom or ion containing one electron only 3. the spectrum of hydrogen molecule 4. the solar spectrum
The spectrum of atoms or ions with only one electron can be explained by Bohr’s model. The mystery of hydrogen spectra was answered by Bohr by formulating postulates
