(i) 100 km
(ii) 25 km
(iii) 15 km
(iv) 10 km
The total distance covered by the car is 25 km. First, for 15 minutes, the car is traveling at a 40 km/hr speed.
15 minutes = 15/60 hours = ¼ hours
Distance covered = speed x time = 40 x ¼ = 10 km
Second, the vehicle has been traveling at 60 km/hr for 15 minutes.
Distance covered = 60 x ¼ = 15 km
Total distance covered = 10 km + 15 km = 25 km.
Distance and Types of Speed
Distance is an object’s overall movement, regardless of direction. Regardless of an object’s starting or ending point, distance can be defined as the amount of ground it has travelled.
There are four different forms of speed.
- If an object travels the same distance in the same amount of time, it is said to be moving at a uniform speed.
- When an object travels a different distance at equal intervals of time, it is said to be moving at a variable speed.
- Average speed is the average speed determined by the ratio of the total distance travelled by an object to the entire amount of time it took to travel that distance.
- Instantaneous speed: The speed of an object at any given moment when it is travelling at a variable speed is referred to as the object’s instantaneous speed.
