Compounds such as alcohols and glucose contain hydrogen but are not categorised as acids. Acids produce hydrogen when dissociated with water which in turn gives rise to the acidic character. Acids are chemicals that dissociate with water to form hydrogen ions. In an aqueous solution, certain chemicals dissolve and release hydrogen ions, which give them an acidic nature.

  • Whether a substance is acidic or non-acidic is determined by the H+ ion's release in water.

  • Alcohol and glucose are examples of compounds that contain hydrogen but lack an acidic character. They do not easily separate their hydrogen from that of acids. They won't split into hydrogen ions as they dissolve in water.

Activity to prove Compounds such as alcohols and glucose contain hydrogen

Get some alcohol, glucose, and hydrochloric acid samples. Fix the nails with a fork and a 100 mL Beaker. Put the cork inside the beaker and attach the nails, using a bulb and a switch, to the two terminals of a 6-volt battery. Turn on the current and add some hydrochloric acid to the beaker. Repeat the process with glucose and alcohol.

  • If there is acid present, the bulb will glow.
  • Alcohol and glucose do not cause it to shine.

The aforementioned conclusion can be drawn because ions transport the electric current across the solution. In an aqueous media, acid ionises to produce H+ ions, but glucose and alcohol do not, despite having hydrogen atoms in them.
