Sahitya Akademi is an organization dedicated to the promotion of literature in the languages of India. Sahitya Akademi (National academy of letters) annually gives awards recognizing the literary works of writers in 24 Indian languages–22 scheduled languages along with English and Rajasthani. In this article, we will read 2017 “Sahitya Akademi Award Winner List of all 24 Language Categories”.

- Indian literature has been evolved since ancient times.
- Rig Veda – texts of the collection of sacred hymns around 1500 BC was the earliest work in Indian Literature.
- In the Medieval period, many south Indian languages have emerged like Malayalam, Telugu, etc. and literature in Marathi, Odia, and Bengali started to emerge as important regional languages.
- In the modern times, Rabindranath Tagore became India’s first Noble Laureate and his contribution to Indian literature along with other scholars and freedom fighters was enormous.
- Before Independence itself, there has been a proposal to establish a National Academy of Letters in India.
- In 1944 National Cultural trust has been empowered to encourage literary field in India.
- After Independence, the Government of India established a National Academy of Letters as also called as Sahitya Akademi in 1952.
- The resolution of Government of India which created the Akademi described it as a national organization to work actively for the development of Indian letters and to set high literary standards, to foster and co-ordinate literary activities in all Indian Languages and to promote through them all the cultural unity of the country.
- The Akademi was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and functions as an autonomous
- It is the central institution that undertakes literary activities in 24 Indian languages along with the promotion of literary dialogue, publication, and promotion of literacy in the country.
Sahitya Akademi Awards
- Sahitya Akademi (National academy of letters) annually gives awards recognizing the literary works of writers in 24 Indian languages–22 scheduled languages along with English and Rajasthani.
- The award which is conferred on individuals consists of,
1. A shawl
2. A casket which consists of engraved copper-plague and
3. A cheque of rupees one lakh (from Rs. 5000 since its inception) - Annually 24 awards are being given by Akademi to the literary works in the recognized languages by the organization and an equal number of awards to literary translations from and into the languages of India, both after a year-long process of scrutiny, discussion and selection.
- The first awards were given in 1955.
Features
- The author must be of Indian nationality.
- The Award will be considered only if there is the minimum of three books in the final stage selection.
- When equal merit for books of two or more are found, certain criteria like the total literary contribution and standing of the authors shall be taken into consideration in declaring the award.
- If no book published in that language during the five years preceding the year of the award merits, the award for any language may not be given during any/particular year.
- The eligibility of the work for the award will be considered based on the order that the book must be an outstanding contribution to the language and literature to which it belongs. The book can be a creative or critical work.
Sahitya Akademi Awards 2017
- Sahitya Akademi announced the awards for the year for 2017 by recognizing the literary works of 24 writers in 24 Indian languages.
