# How to Solve New Pattern Coding Decoding Questions in Exam?

Dear aspirants,

In banking Exam, the level of questions in Reasoning section is increasing day by day. The format of traditional questions is changing. For instance, in SBI PO 2017 Mains Exam the coding-decoding questions were asked in the new format. In this article, we will do the analysis of this new pattern followed by some questions for practice.

The memory-based questions on this topic of SBI PO Mains 2017 are given below:-

Directions (1-3): Study the information carefully answers the questions given below.

@ Means either hour hand or minute hand is at 8

# Means either hour hand or minute hand is at 5

\$ Means either hour hand or minute hand is at 4

% Means either hour hand or minute hand is at 12

& Means either hour hand or minute hand is at 2

£ Means either hour hand or minute hand is at 3

Note: If two symbols are given than by default first symbol is considered as hour hand and the second one is considered as minute hand. And all time are consider at PM.

Q3. A person has to catch a train that is scheduled to depart at ‘@%’. It takes the person 4 hours and 15 minutes to reach the railway station from his home. At what time should he leave from his home for the railway station to arrive at the station at least 25 minutes before the departure of the train?

(c) %+

(d) +@

(e) None of these

Note: In such questions, we are required to follow the instructions given in question very carefully. Now we will solve these questions one by one.

Q1:-If A takes 25 min to reach railway station and his train is scheduled at #& then at what time should he leave to reach the station 5 minute earlier?

Solution:– First of all decode the time given in the coded form since the first symbol represents hour and # means Hour/minute hand on 5. It means time is 5 hrs. past & minutes. As the second symbol represents minutes and & means hour/minute hand at 2. Therefore the time is 5 hours 10 minutes PM.

He takes 25 minutes to reach railway station and he wants to reach 5 minutes earlier which means he has to leave home 30 minutes earlier. Now subtract these, minutes from the time of train and that is 5:10 pm. The result will be 4:40 pm. Now code this time in symbols and the answer is (d) \$ @.

Q2:- If a train departed from a station at &£ and it takes 2 hours to reach the destination then when it will reach to the destination?

Solution: – The code &£ stands for 02:15 PM, Now add 2 hours to it, it becomes 04:15 PM. The code for 04:15 is (A) \$£.

Q3. A person has to catch a train that is scheduled to depart at ‘@%’. It takes the person 4 hours and 15 minutes to reach the railway station from his home. At what time should he leave from his home for the railway station to arrive at the station at least 25 minutes before the departure of the train?

Solution: – The code @% stands for 08:00 PM, To reach station 25 minutes in advance and the time required to reach station is 04 hrs. and 15 minutes, the total time is 04 hrs. and 40 minutes. Therefore he should leave home at 03:20 PM. The code for this time is (B) £\$

The candidates should practice questions of this pattern as this pattern can be repeated in IBPS PO 2017. For the sake of practice two Questions are given below:-

Solutions (1-3)

1. Ans (A)Given time is 07:15 pm, time taken to reach school 3 hrs. so new time is 10:15 pm and in the coded form it is %\$.

2. Ans (E) – The distance between their houses is not given.

3. Ans (E) – Given time is 10:45 total time of journey is 2 hrs so he left home at 8:45 since he left home 30 minutes earlier his usual timing is 09:15 i.e. @\$

Solutions (4-6)

Ans 4 (B) – TV show is of 02 hrs. and 10 minutes it started at 05:50 so it will end at 08:00 which is £@.

Ans 5 (C) – The show started at 05:10 am the adv. are played such that 6-2-6-1-6-4-6, second adv. Will end after 15 minutes or at 05:25 am which is \$\$.

Ans 6 (D) – The third adv. will end after 25 minutes, or at #\$ (05:35 am).
