An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a convex mirror of a focal length of 15 cm. The position of the image is behind the mirror and the nature of the image is virtual.

Given that:

  • u = -10 cm
  • f = 15 cm

Now we have to find v

We know the formula

1/f = 1/v + 1/u

Therefore, 1/v = 1/f – 1/u

By changing the known variables in the aforementioned equation, we obtain,

  • 1/v = 1/15 – (-1/10)
  • 1/v= 1/15 + 1/10
  • 1/v = (2 + 3)/30 (LCM)

Hence

  • v = 5/30
  • v = 6cm

The virtual image is created behind the mirror.

The type of image that was created

  • When the v is positive, the image is formed inside the mirror, and when the v is negative, the image is formed in front of the mirror.
  • This shows that, in this case, the image is created within the mirror at a distance of 6 cm from the mirror’s pole.
  • The resulting image is genuine when v is negative; it is virtual when v is positive.

Summary:

An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm. Find the position and nature of the image.

A convex mirror with a focal length of 15 cm is placed 10 cm away from an object. The picture is virtual in nature and is positioned behind the mirror. v is positive which means that the image is formed inside the mirror.
