The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), originally known as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, is India's major nuclear research centre founded in January 1954 by Homi Jehangir Bhabha. It is managed by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), which is directly directed by India's Prime Minister. After Homi Jehangir Bhabha's death in 1966, AEET was renamed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

BARC is a multi-disciplinary research centre with significant facilities for advanced research and development encompassing the whole spectrum of nuclear science, electronic instruments, chemical engineering, supercomputing, material sciences and metallurgy, high-energy physics as well as related research for the Indian nuclear programme and other fields.

  • BARC Scientific Officers (Scientists and Engineers) are recruited through two main programmes.
  • OCES and DGFS
  • Dr K.S. Krishnan Research Associateship (KSKRA)

Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES)

  • Mainly for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates
  • To guarantee, Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) have the required facilities in nuclear science and technology research and development
  • The programme includes foundation, core, advanced, and elective courses, as well as mini-projects
  • The course work includes classroom lectures, practical training, and project work
  • It is divided into three trimesters and completed in one year, beginning on August 1st of each year
  • Examinations and assignments are used to assess students on a regular basis
  • Appointed as a Scientific Officer 'C' under the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix at Level 10 - ₹ 56,100.

DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates (DGFS)

  • Formed in collaboration with eight IITs, BHU-Varanasi, NIT-Rourkela, and ICT-Mumbai.

  • The DAE guidelines offer projects based on DAE requirements and the M.Tech./M.Chem.Engg speciality of the relevant DGFS Fellow.

Dr K.S. Krishnan Research Associateship (KSKRA)

  • Associates under the KSKRA programme have the chance to work on R&D programmes linked to the DAE mandate, with the possibility of regular absorption in DAE units.
  • PhD degree in Engineering or Master's degree in Engineering (M.Tech./ M.E./M.S.) with a minimum of 2-year R&D experience
  • For Scientists: PhD degree in Science
  • All candidates must provide a list of publications to demonstrate their R&D experience
  • During their Associateship, Associates will be given Hostel accommodations, medical coverage, and leave benefits.

Compensation

BARC Scientific Officers are assigned a grade and pay scale of Level 10 - ₹ 56,100 under the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. All Total Monthly Emoluments (with three increments) granted to the Scientific Officer upon joining comprise Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and Transcription Allowance.

Aside from the aforementioned allowances, further benefits include yearly leave travel concessions by air for the first eight years (according to restrictions) and once every two years thereafter, Children's Education Allowance, and an annual Professional Update Allowance. A complete Contributory Health Service Scheme is also offered for employees and their dependent family members.

Working hours

Like any other organization, there are also strict working hours of around 8-8.5 hours but you are also free to spend your quality time in research even more than the above. These are regulated after some period and has an important factor in yearly grading.
