The National Testing Agency (NTA) is authorized to conduct the National Eligibility Test (NET), on behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC) to ascertain the eligibility of the Candidates for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Assistant Professor both, in Indian Universities as well as Colleges.

The Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the NET until June 2018. However, from December 2018 onwards, the UGC-NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is conducted twice a year in an online mode and not offline as it was conducted before.

The Eligibility for Assistant Professor or award of JRF depends upon the aggregate performance of the candidate in both the papers (Paper-I and Paper-II) of the UGC-NET. It is to be noted that the candidates who qualify only for Assistant Professor are not be taken into consideration for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). However, the candidates that clear or qualify JRF exam are also eligible for the National Eligibility Test.
