The two Main Types of Drip Irrigation are sub-surface and surface drip irrigation. Water is applied using small tubes below the soil’s surface in sub-surface drip irrigation. In the second method, water is sprayed directly onto the soil’s surface using drip irrigation. Many different types of droplet emitter devices employ this common technique.

Main Types of Drip Irrigation

A system of small-diameter plastic pipes with outlets called emitters or drippers is used for drip irrigation, also known as trickle irrigation. It drips water onto the soil at very low rates (2-20 liters/hour). The advantages are higher water application efficiency and minimized water loss or nutrition loss.

Enables the safe use of recycled water.
The soil type plays a less critical role in the irrigation frequency. Highly even water distribution is achieved. It is also operated at a lower pressure than the others.
Most large drip irrigation systems use filters to prevent the smaller emitter path from clogging. New technologies are now being offered to minimize clogging.
In addition to other filtration systems, last-line filters are strongly recommended just before the final discharge line.
Drip systems often mix liquid fertilizer with irrigation water, a process called fertigation and chemigation.
