What are the Main Constituents of Biogas?

By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: November 9th, 2023

The Main Constituents of Biogas are carbon dioxide (25-50%) and methane (50-75%). A small amount of nitrogen (2-8%) is also present in it. Depending on its constituents, trace amounts of ammonia, hydrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and various volatile organic compounds are also present in biogas. Biogas is a renewable energy source because its production and utilization are ongoing and produce no net carbon dioxide.

Main Constituents of Biogas

Biogas is formed by the decomposition of organic matter with the action of bacteria in the absence of oxygen. Biogas constitutes several components, out of which Methane (CH4) and Carbon dioxide (CO2) form its major constituents. Apart from these two gases, Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Siloxanes, and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) are also present in them.

The exact percentage depends on many factors, such as retention time and operating temperature. It is formed by the decomposition of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.

Features of Biogas

Here are some of the salient features of biogas.

  • This is a renewable source of energy that is produced through organic matter.
  • It produces anaerobic digestion of farm, municipal, food, and other biodegradable waste.’
  • Cattle dung, night soil, and agricultural wastes form a major part of its composition.
  • Biogas is used for industrial purposes, and it also reduces the dependency on firewood.
  • As organic matter grows, it is transformed and used. It then regrows in a continuously renewing cycle.

Summary:

The Main Composition of Biogas is

Methane and Carbon dioxide form the Main Composition of Biogas. Apart from this, it also consists of other ingredients, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), water vapor (H2O), nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2), and ammonia (NH3).
