The Siachen glacier is a piedmont glacier in the Karakoram mountain range. Piedmont glaciers are those that form at the base of mountain ranges. Except for the polar ice caps, the mountain glaciers found in this region contain a significant amount of freshwater.
The glacier is located between the Saltoro Ridge subrange of the Karakorams in the west and the main Karakoram range in the east. This makes the Siachen glacier the world’s second-longest non-polar glacier. Tajikistan’s Fedchenko Glacier is the world’s longest glacier.
The Location of Siachen Glacier is significant in terms of the National Security of Indian borders. Indian Army personnel are deployed at this inaccessible place. Undoubtedly, they are heavily armed and equipped at their place to combat any situation, including the harsh climate of the terrain. This is because the Siachen glacier has been a matter of territorial dispute between India and Pakistan.
