National leaders like P.N. Mehta, Dadabhai Nauroji, W.C. Banerji, D.E. Wacha, S.N. Banerji, and Gopal Krishna Gokhale were called Moderates. It was because they were staunch believers in liberalism and moderate politics. They believed in reconciliation and patience rather than in confrontation and violence.

Moderates Proposal Struggle Against British Rule
The main objective of the moderates was to achieve self-government. Moderates proposed to struggle against British rule by taking the following actions:
- Developing public awareness about the unjust nature of British rule.
- Writing articles, publishing newspapers, and showing how British rule is ruining the Indian economy.
- Criticizing the British rule in their speeches.
Moderate Leaders in India
Pherozeshah Mehta and Dadabhai Naoroji were two of the significant moderate leaders. Many of the group’s members were educated in England, and they were drawn from educated middle-class professionals, such as lawyers, teachers, and government officials.
- They are referred to as “Early Nationalists” because they believed in pushing for reforms while using legal and peaceful methods to do so.
- The Early Nationalists believed that British rule was beneficial for India and had complete faith in the British sense of justice, fair play, honesty, and integrity.
- The Early Nationalists were ardent supporters of tolerant and open-minded politics.
Furthermore, the moderates believed in the path of politics of prayer. They also felt that the British would listen to their demands as they respected the ideals of freedom and justice.
