IAS Meaning

IAS is one of the three All-India Services of the country, along with IPS and IFoS. IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service. Members of the IAS serve in union government, state government, and even in the public sector and international organizations. To name a few, IAS officers are posted as SDM, Collectors, Commissioner, Chief Secretaries, Cabinet Secretaries, etc. Hierarchy-wise, IAS is the top-level post among the 24 civil services like IFS, IRS, etc.

The performance of IAS officers is assessed through a performance appraisal report. The reports are reviewed to judge an officer’s suitability before a promotion or a posting in the union or state governments.

IAS Age Limit

As per the IAS Exam, the UPSC Eligibility states that candidates who have attained 21 years of age and less than 32 years as of August 2022 could apply for the IAS Exam. However, 3-10 years of age relaxation is applicable as per the category.

IAS Educational Qualification

Candidates willing to appear for the IAS Exam must meet the educational qualification set by the commission. The minimum educational qualification to become an IAS Officer are listed below.

  • Candidates must have graduated from a recognized university or have an equivalent qualification.
  • Candidates who are in their final year can also apply for IAS
  • Candidates having professional and technical qualifications recognized by the government as equivalent to technical and professional degrees are also eligible for the IAS Exam.

IAS Exam – Full Form, Stage-wise Details

The IAS Exam is conducted annually in May-June by the UPSC to recruit eligible candidates. The UPSC Exam is conducted in three stages: Prelims, Mains, and Interview/Personality Test.

Lakhs of candidates appear for the IAS Exam, but only a handful (around 800-1000) is selected. The IAS Exam is considered one of the toughest exams in the country.

Prelims Stage

The UPSC Prelims is the trickiest part of the exam. Though it is just a screening test and marks of this stage are not compiled for the final result, aspirants need to be very careful in this stage. The IAS Prelims has two papers, which are of MCQ type- GS Paper 1 and CSAT. The UPSC Prelims Syllabus is detailed and majorly covers everything, and the CSAT Syllabus covers the analytical and basic language skills required for the exam.

CSAT is qualifying in nature, and one needs to score a minimum of 33% in this paper. Therefore, the General Studies paper will define your UPSC Cutoff score.

Mains Stage

The UPSC Mains is a written descriptive exam and comprises 9 papers. Out of the 9, two language papers are just qualifying in nature, whereas the rest of the 7 papers are collectively used for making the final scorecard of the UPSC Exam.

The UPSC Mains Syllabus exhaustively covers all the GS papers that need to be prepared, along with the List of Optional Subjects one can choose to appear for the IAS Exam. UPSC offers 48 subjects to choose from for their Optional Subjects.

Interview Stage

The candidates that qualify for the UPSC Mains are called for UPSC Interview or the Personality Test at the Dholpur House, New Delhi. In the Interview Stage, the selected candidates are allotted the Board Group, headed by a board member/ UPSC Chairman and 4-5 other senior eminent personalities from diverse fields. The questions asked in the interview can range from diverse topics but would majorly focus on your DAF.
