IAS Interview is the final stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Those candidates who clear the Mains examination get an e-summon letter to appear in the UPSC Interview conducted at the Union Public Service Commission office housed at Dholpur House in Delhi. This round has a total of 275 marks and great scoring potential. As it is the last chance for the candidates to increase their final score, they must know everything about the IAS Interview process.

What is IAS Interview?

After the declaration of the UPSC Mains result, the shortlisted candidates get an interview call letter from the Commission. The IAS interview is the final round of the selection process. Here the board members will test the personality of the candidates, and it carries a total of 275 marks. The IAS Interview lasts around 20 minutes, and aspirants face interview questions on a broad range of topics. Facing the UPSC Interview may seem daunting, but you can ace it if you are armed with information and facts.

UPSC Interview Important Details

Here are some important details a candidate should know about the UPSC interview.

  • The venue for IAS Interview is Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi-110069.
  • Timing is mentioned in the call letter of the candidates. There are two sessions per day – the forenoon session (9 AM onwards) and the afternoon session (1 PM onwards).
  • The dress code is basic and formal.
  • The maximum marks is 275.

UPSC Interview Date 2023

After the declaration of the UPSC result for Mains, selected candidates should start preparing according to their UPSC Interview date. The IAS Interview 2023 was conducted from 30.01.2022 to 10.03.2023. The results for the same is expected to be out in April 2023.

Last year, the UPSC Interview date was released on 17th March 2022 after the declaration of Mains result of 2021. The qualified candidates appeared for the IAS Interview from 05 April 2022 until 26 May 2022.

IAS Interview Process

Those who will be going for the IAS Interview for the first time might feel overwhelmed. However, having prior knowledge of the interview process can make things easier for you. Below we have covered the entire UPSC interview process to boost your confidence level:

  • Candidates need to reach the given place at the right time, and the security in front of UPSC does verification. The verification includes checking the candidate’s name and call letter. Candidates need to carry their government-issued ID proof. Check the complete list of documents required for UPSC Interview here.
  • After that, the candidates enter the gates of UPSC. They are required to check in their bags and mobile phones. The candidates are made to sit in the entrance hall where their documents are verified. This process is done smoothly, and there are also newspapers with tea/water and biscuits for the candidates.
  • After submitting the documents, they are given the number of the panel and the sequence number of the order in which they have to show before the panel.
  • The candidates are then taken to a large circular hall in the center of the building complex. Here the candidates are seated and grouped as per their panel number. This is where some staff will hand out forms for travel reimbursement for out-of-town candidates.
  • In one session, the panel takes interviews of five to six candidates. The IAS interview process lasts around 20 minutes, with a time limit. Some aspirants have been a part of the 40-minute interview too.
  • The names are called one by one, and candidates make their appearances in their respective panels. A staff member escorts the candidate to the room of the panel chairperson.

Things to Remember for IAS Interview

Before appearing for the UPSC interview, here are some important things candidates must know:

  • The forenoon session starts from 9 AM onwards, and the afternoon session starts from 1 PM onwards.
  • Candidates usually reach at 8.45 AM for the forenoon session. The formalities are done, and the first candidates to appear before the panel will be around 10.15 AM. One can estimate their waiting period based on the sequence number.
  • The waiting period can be long, so candidates are advised not to go sleep-deprived or with an empty stomach.
  • A calm, humble, and polite candidate has the best chance of scoring good marks in an IAS interview.
  • Candidates must be fully prepared for all types of IAS Interview Questions.
