- Tourism is the fastest growing service industry globally. The economy of many countries’ economies depend on tourism, and the sector can generate many skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
- It assists in the re-distribution of income and is an excellent tool for poverty reduction & obtaining lower urban-rural disparity and rich-poor divide.

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation
- Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), a company set up by the Maharashtra Government in 1975, with an approved share capital of Rs.25 Crores.
- The purpose of this body is to double tourist traffic into the state in the next five years.
- Apart from acting as the state’s nodal agency for promoting and developing tourism, MTDC also projects and enhances its historical, physical, and cultural heritage. A State Tourism Board, MTDC has been playing a pivotal role in launching Maharashtra’s multi-faceted culture and heritage among visitors from all over the country and the world.
- The primary role of this Government body is to act as the nodal agency for the development of tourism in the state, run holiday resorts, hotels, motels, restaurants, and produce publicity and promotional material for tourists. It also arranges festivals at the heritage sites and places of historical and tourist attractions in the state, such as Banganga, Kala Ghoda, Pune etc. It gets support from Corporates and other sponsors for such initiatives.

Having a coastline of 720 km along the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra possesses a variety of beaches. One can find crowded and posh beaches like Juhu and Marine Drive Chowpatty beaches and earthy and sleepy beaches like Harnai and Bassein, which are a bit slow but provide a peaceful and pollution-free environment.
