How Many Times is a GATE Exam Conducted in a Year: GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering and is conducted for admission in the post-graduate education programs or PSUs’ recruitment in various branches of engineering. The GATE exam is conducted every year in February. The GATE exam is conducted in the first and second week of February for 29 different disciplines/subjects. GATE is a Computer Based Test and contains 65 questions. The GATE exam is conducted only one time per year. Students are given a choice to either opt for one subject or even two subjects based on the guidelines given by the GATE officials. What is the GATE Exam Pattern?

The exam will carry 65 questions, out of which General Aptitude will be over 15 marks with 10 questions, and the rest will be subject-based and will carry 85 marks. Subjects in which Engineering Mathematics is compulsory will carry 12-15 marks of the same.

There will be only three types of questions in the paper, i.e., MSQ or NAT and MCQ. Students will have to solve all the questions within 3 hours. MSQ(Multiple Select Questions) or NAT(Numeric Answer Type) questions will not carry negative marks when answered wrong. In contrast, MCQ-based questions will be penalized with negative marks when answered wrong.

Marking Scheme

For MCQs carrying 1 mark: 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

For MCQs carrying 2 marks: 2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect response.

There is no negative marking for Multiple Select questions (MSQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.

Precise calculation is required to form the candidates. GATE virtual calculator will be provided on the individual computer screen for calculation purposes on the day of the examination. Students will not be allowed to use the keyboard(hardware) but will use the on-screen keyboard to type numeric terms.
