GATE ECE exam pattern 2023 will be officially released with the notification brochure for the candidates to check. Aspirants are advised to check the GATE exam pattern before starting the preparation. IIT Kanpur will release the GATE ECE exam pattern this year for the upcoming exam.

GATE ECE Exam Pattern 2023

It is very important to know the GATE ECE exam pattern 2023 so that candidates can have the most effective preparation for the upcoming exam. The information brochure will carry the exam pattern which will be carrying the information about the trend and guidelines on which the exam will be formulated. ECE is one of the most competitive branches of the GATE exam. Candidates belonging to the Electronics and Communication Engineering field can apply for GATE ECE 2023 after the release of the application process. 

  •  There will be Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs)​ and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions that will be asked in the exam.
  • There will be no negative marking for any wrong attempt at NAT questions
  • The GATE EC paper has three parts including General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and Subject-specific part ( Electronics and Communication Engineering).
  • Questions related to General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills) & Engineering Mathematics in addition to the main subject of the paper will also be included in the exam.
  • 72% weightage is given to the Electronics and Communication Engineering section, 15%, to General Aptitude and 13% to Engineering Mathematics in GATE EC 2023 Exam.

GATE ECE Total Number of Sections

As per the GATE ECE exam pattern, the exam paper will have three different sections. All will carry questions from different subjects and will also carry different mark distribution which is explained below:

General Aptitude carrying 15% of the total marks, Engineering Mathematics carrying 13% of the total marks, and Mechanical Engineering Subject Questions carrying 72% of the total marks.

GATE ECE Time Duration and Marks Details

The GATE ECE exam pattern will also carry the details related to the exam duration and marks each type of question will carry. Here we have elaborated on the points necessary for the exam in detail.

  • The total marks in GATE ECE are 100
  • The total number of questions is 65.
  • The duration of GATE ECE is 3-hours
  • It is a computer-based paper.
  • The language of the GATE ECE exam is English.

GATE ECE Marking Scheme

GATE ECE exam pattern also elaborates on the marking scheme of the exam. It will explain all the information such as the deduction of the marks for the wrong answers, which question will carry negative marking and which will carry no negative marking with it. 

  • One-third of marks will be deducted for the incorrect attempts  for every 1 Mark MCQs 
  • Two-thirds of marks will be deducted for every 2 Mark MCQs 
  • No marks will be given nor any marks will be deducted for questions that are left unanswered.
  • No deduction of marks for the wrong answers in Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • No partial credit for choosing partially correct combinations of choices or any single wrong choice.

  • The duration of the GATE EC exam is 3 hours as per the exam pattern. Candidates will have to answer the given questions within the time limit mentioned in the GATE ECE exam pattern. Around 2.67 mins per question will be allotted to the candidates on the day of the examination.

  • As per the GATE ECE exam pattern, questions will be mentioned only in one language. The language of the GATE ECE exam is English. 

  • As per the GATE ECE exam pattern, only MCQ-based questions will carry the negative marking. There is no negative marking for MSQs and NATs-based questions in GATE ECE. 1/3rd or the allotted make will be deducted if answered wrong.
