The job profile of the candidates selected for the DBT Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) position depends on which category they choose. DBT JRF Salary 2023

DBT Juniоr Reseаrсh Fellоwshiр (JRF) рrоgrаm is the flаgshiр аnd the mоst рrestigiоus рrоgrаm оf the Deраrtment оf Biоteсhnоlоgy (DBT), Gоvernment оf Indiа. Every yeаr аrоund 1000 оf students аррly fоr this рrestigiоus рrоgrаm. The main key objective of the DBT-JRF fellowship program is to offer fellowship to enough researchers in the field of Biotechnology in the country. Therefore, the DBT-JRF entrance exam is exclusively framed for Biotechnology qualifications. Hence candidates with stuff other than Biotech will have a lot of reading to do.

DBT JRF has 2 main categories to provide fellowships to aspiring candidates.,

  • Candidates selected under category I, which offers 275 fellowships, will be entitled to obtain a Ph.D. fellowship under the Biotechnology and Life Sciences programs at any Institute in India.
  • Whereas candidates selected in category II, in which a merit list of 100 students is published, can get an appointment in a project sponsored by any DBT-funded external projects in the country.

DBT JRF Salary Structure 2023

Along with the monthly fixed pay, every candidate recruited for the post of DBT JRF has fixed allowances as decided per the 7th Pay commission and Pay Matrix Level. The allowances are listed below:

  • House Rent Allowance (Only if reasonable hostel accommodation is not available)
  • Medical benefits (as per the rules of the concerned DBT/ or any other institute)

Note: No bonus or travel allowances are applicable for the Junior Research Fellows appointed under the DBT JRF Programme.

DBT JRF In-Hand Fellowship

The basic pay given to the candidates recruited for the post of DBT JRF is incremented considerably from ₹ 31000 per month. The in-hand salary received by the DBT Junior Research Fellows is ₹ 31000 plus the house rent allowance (HRA) (applicable only if the Institute does not provide suitable hostel accommodation). The house rent allowance varies between 8%, 16%, and 24%, depending on the city of the Institute.

DBT JRF Salary Annual Package

The candidates selected for the DBT JRF will receive the annual package as per the latest UGC and DBT norms, as per the 7th Pay Commission. The monthly fellowship amount is ₹ 31000 per month, and additional House Rent Allowances (HRA) are also provided (if applicable).

DBT JRF Job Profile 2023

Based on the performance of candidates in the DBT JRF Examination, two categories of merit lists will be prepared to provide fellowships. Their job profile will be based on whether the candidates are selected under category I or II of the DBT JRF.

  • Candidates selected under category I can obtain a Ph.D. fellowship under Biotechnology and Life Sciences programs at any Institute across India.
  • Candidates selected in category II will be appointed to exterior projects sponsored by DBT. They can also avail of fellowship equal to NET / GATE, which is subject to admission through the admission process of the particular institute. They are expected to routinely perform lab experiments involving molecular biology and biotechnology and fulfill all demands to achieve project goals.

DBT JRF Probation Period

There is no such specific period of Probation period for the post-DBT JRF. However, candidates for the DBT JRF must complete a minimum of 2 years of Junior Research Fellowship (HRF) to be eligible for the Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) position.

DBT JRF: Career Growth and Promotion

Promotion and growth aspects for DBT JRF depend on various parameters like projects, performance index, work experience, etc. 

  • On completion of two years as JRF, the candidate's progress will be evaluated for up-gradation to SRF by a "Three Member Assessment Committee" of that particular Institute in which the candidate is enrolled.
  • If the committee does not recommend up-gradation, the candidate will continue as JRF for another year.
  • The maximum tenure is 5 years. However, an extension of the term from 4 years to 5 years will be based on the progress report and the committee's recommendation.

  • Саndidаtes get аn аdditiоnаl mediсаl аllоwаnсe аs рer the nоrms оf thаt раrtiсulаr DBT оr аny оther institute in whiсh they аre enrоlled.

  • The sаlаry оf а quаlified DBT- JRF  is inсremented оnly if they аre рrоmоted fоr the роst оf Seniоr Reseаrсh Fellоwshiр (SRF). In suсh саses, the sаlаry is hiked uр frоm Rs 31000 tо Rs 35000 рer mоnth рlus HRА (if аррliсаble).

  • There is nо рrоbаtiоn рeriоd fоr the роst оf DBT JRF. Candidates who get selected for the exam will be given a fellowship for the particle program.
