Who was the Last Nawab of Bengal?

The Last Nawab of Bengal was Mansur Ali Khan. He ruled Bengal from 1838 to 1880. Hassan Ali Mirza, his eldest son, succeeded the last nawab. Hassan Ali Mirza was the first Nawab of Murshidabad. (Murshid Quli Khan was the first Nawab of Bengal who ruled from 1717 to 1727.) In February 1869, Nawab Mansur Ali Khan began residing in England after leaving Murshidabad. In 1880, the position of the Nawab of Bengal was abolished.

The three territories of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, which now make up the independent nation of Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, were de facto ruled independently by the Nawab of Bengal in the early 18th century.

The Nawabs had their headquarters in Murshidabad, which was in the middle of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.

During the Mughal period, the Nawab of Bengal was the dynastic ruler of the Bengal Subah. Emperor Aurangzeb removed his grandson Azim-ush-Shan (who was the Subahdar of Bengal) from Bengal. Bengal’s de facto ruler then was the provincial premier Murshid Quli Khan. Murshid Quli Khan merged the diwan & subedar positions in an administrative coup and became the first Nawab of Bengal. He moved Bengal’s capital from Dhaka to a new city he had named after himself (Murshidabad) in 1716.
