Vikas Engine was invented by ISRO scientists including Nambi Narayanan, who played a critical role. The initials Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai, i.e., a portmanteau of Vikas Engine is a liquid-propellant rocket engine family designed by the Center for Liquid Propulsion Systems in the 1970s. The design was in accordance with the Viking engine, a licensed version with a chemical pressurization system.

Inventor of the Vikas Engine

The first production of Vikas engines used a few imported French components that were later replaced by domestic equivalents. It is utilized in the expendable launch vehicle series for use in space known as the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

  • The most recent test was carried out in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu, at the ISRO Propulsion Complex.
  • It was conducted to observe the engine performance under conditions that were not optimal, like changing the fuel-to-oxidizer ratio or fuel chamber pressure.
  • Regarding the qualification of the Vikas engine for the Gaganyaan mission, two engines were tested already under nominal operating conditions for 480 seconds.

Vikas Engine Invention in India

  • The PSLV second stage, boosters, GSLV Mark I and II second stages, and the GSLV Mark III core stage are all propelled by the Vikas engine.
  • In PSLV, GSLV Mark I and II, the Vikas engine’s propellant charge is 40 tonnes, whereas, in GSLV Mark III, it is 55 tonnes.
  • The High Pressure or High-Speed VIKAS Engine (HPVE) and the HTVE are two fascinating new Vikas engines (High Thrust VIKAS Engine).

Summary:

Who Invented the Vikas Engine?

The ISRO scientists, including Nambi Narayanan, created the Vikas Engine. The first stage of the launch vehicle, which used solid propellants, is already certified for the mission.
