The Largest Desert in India is the Great Indian Desert, also known as the Thar Desert. The Thar Desert is the 9th largest hot subtropical desert and the 20th largest desert in the world. It is an arid region located in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent that forms a natural boundary between India (85%) and Pakistan (15%), covering an area of 77,000 square miles.

The Punjab plain to the north and northeast, the Indus River plain to the west, the Rann of Kachchh to the south, and the Aravalli Range to the southeast encircle India’s largest desert, the Thar.

  • There are 40 species of trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses.

  • It draws a border naturally between these two nations.
  • In this region, the temperature ranges from 50 degrees Celsius in the summer to -4 to -5 degrees Celsius in the winter.
  • The Blackbuck, Fox, and other endangered species can be found in the Thar Desert.
  • In the middle of the Thar Desert, there is a protected area for birds called Tal Chhapar Sanctuary.
