The plateau situated between the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges is the Malwa plateau. ‘Malva’ is a word derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Malav’, which means part of the abode of Goddess Lakshmi.

The Malwa plateau is bounded by the Bundelkhand highlands to the north, the Vindhya ranges to the east and south, and Gujarat plains to the west. The Muslims conquered the Malwa plateau in 1390 AD and it passed into the hands of the British in 1817.
