What is the Article 330?

Article 330 of the Indian Constitution is the reservation of seats in the House of People for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. According to Article 330, seats in the House of People shall be reserved for the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, save for the Scheduled Tribes in Assam’s autonomous districts.

As per Article 330, seats shall be reserved for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the House of People. This was a step towards the larger inclusion of this particular section of people in the country’s growth and development.

As mentioned in Article 330, the following things need to be ensured:

  • The number of seats reserved in any Union or State territory for the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes under Clause (1) should bear an equal proportion to the total number of seats allotted to that State or Union territory in the House of People as the population of the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes in the State or Union territory, as the case may be, bears to the total population.
  • Notwithstanding the provisions outlined in Clause (2), the number of seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the House of People in the autonomous districts of Assam shall not be less than the proportion of the Scheduled Tribes population in the said districts to the total population of the State, up to the total number of seats allotted to the State.
