On September 27, 2013, the Election Commission was given the go-ahead to add a NOTA button to each voting machine. NOTA full form is ‘None of the above.’ It gives power to the voters to not choose any candidate if none of them seems appropriate.

NOTA’s first introduction in India
Voters in India have had the option of NOTA in the majority of elections since 2009. However, the Supreme Court mandated the adoption of NOTA in the context of direct elections to the Lok Sabha and the corresponding state assemblies in the PUCL v. Union of India Judgement 2013 decision.
NOTA has grown in popularity among Indian voters, garnering more votes than the winning margin in elections for the state assemblies of Gujarat (2017), Karnataka (2018), Madhya Pradesh (2018), and Rajasthan (2018).
The Need to introduce NOTA:
In our nation, it frequently occurs for voters to be forced to choose a candidate even when they do not favor any of the candidates.
- The Supreme Court of India’s judges contends that voters should be allowed to select None of the above or NOTA.
- This allows voters to reject all the candidates that are participating in the election.
- It will drive political parties to present candidates who are suitable and free from corruption.
