The SSB Interview is designed to assess candidates based on 15 key character traits known as Officer Like Qualities. This evaluation is carried out through a systematic process:

  • Mansa (thoughts): Psychological tests are conducted to assess this aspect.
  • Vacha (speech): Interviews are conducted to evaluate this quality.
  • Karma (deeds or actions): Group testing is performed to gauge this trait.

Day-wise SSB Interview Process

The SSB Interview Procedure spans over 5 days, subject to variation based on the SSB Board’s requirements and the type of entry candidates appear for. Here’s a detailed overview:

Day 0 (Reporting):

  • Aspirants are received at the station by an officer(s) and taken to the selection centre.
  • An ‘Opening Address’ provides them with information about their stay for the next 5 days.
  • Document Verification confirms the authenticity of their original documents.
  • In some boards, the Reporting day is considered Day 1 of SSB, and the testing begins on the same day.

Day 1 (Screening):

  • Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIR Test – Paper 1 & Paper 2) is conducted.
  • Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP&DT) is carried out in two parts: Picture Perception and Group Discussion.

Day 2 (Psychology Test):

  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) involves writing stories based on 12 images.
  • Word Association Test (WAT) requires writing sentences associated with 60 given words.
  • Situation Reaction Test (SRT) assesses reactions to 60 real-life situations.
  • Self-Description Test (SDT) involves writing about self-description and desired qualities.

Day 3 (Group Testing – I):

  • Group Discussion on current events or social issues.
  • Group Planning Exercise (GPE) to identify and solve problems in a group.
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT) to overcome given obstacles.
  • Group Obstacle Race (GOR) where groups compete against each other.
  • Half Group Task (HGT) conducted with a smaller group over a single obstacle.

Day 4 (Group Testing – II):

  • Lecturette where candidates speak on a chosen topic for 3 minutes.
  • Individual Obstacles (IO) to clear 10 given obstacles in 3 minutes.
  • Command Task (CT) where candidates act as commanders and overcome obstacles.
  • Final Group Task (FGT) where the entire group completes an assigned task.

Day 5 (Conference):

  • The board conducts a conference to discuss the suitability of each candidate.
  • Individual Aspirants appear before the board to hear their assessment.
