The English language is made up of four parts. These are -
- GREEK ROOTS
- GERMAN ROOTS
- FRENCH ROOTS
- LATIN ROOTS
Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.
What is a root?
A root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.
How many parts is a word made of?
A word is made up of three parts.
For example - Transferable
Here 'Trans' is a prefix, 'Fer' is the root and 'able' is the suffix.
Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another. SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
Root Word for Today: AM
Today we have taken 'Am' as a ROOT which has various meanings: Love, Liking, Fondness, Friendliness
Now with the help of this one root, you can come out with the conclusion of several other English words. Such as,
1) Enamored- (en-am-rd) - in love with a person or thing
Usage - Jane is enamoured with tennis and plays the sport every day.
2) Amicable:- (am-i-kuh-bull) - showing a polite and friendly desire to avoid disagreement and argument
Usage - Most customer service agents are amicable people who are good at settling disagreements.
3) Amiable:- ( a-mee-uh-bull) - being nice; displaying a friendly and pleasant manner
Usage - Because she was nice to all her fellow students, she got the maximum votes in the contest the most amiable female at her school.
4)Amity:- (am-i-tee) - a supportive relationship between people or countries
Usage - The amity between the two neighbors led them to share food supplies during the harsh winter storm.
5) Amorous- (am-er-us) - having or showing strong feelings of attraction or love
Usage - A celebrity should have amorous nature if he or she wants to be loved by fans.
6) Amatory- (am-a-to-ry) - : associated with love
Usage - The amatory letters described the bonding between the couple.
7) Amenity::- ( a-men-i-ty) - a thing or condition that makes an event or life more enjoyable or lovable
Usage - The hotel has every amenity you could want.
8) Amateur::- ( am-a-teur) - one who “loves” to do something but is not a professional at it/engaging or engaged in without payment; non-professional.
Usage -Even though I am an amateur singer, I hope to make a career out of it one day.
9)Amative:- (am-uh-tiv) - Relating to or inclined toward love
Usage - Early the wise man has said: "Marriage is an amative graveyard.
