The English Language is an important part of every Banking Exam. Some aspirants find English very hard and fail to secure good marks. This happens partly due to the fact that they lack a good vocabulary. We have started this series to aid aspirants to improve their vocabulary.
Basic Knowledge related to Root Words of English:
The English language is made up of four parts. These are -

Now if you learn these roots, you can figure out the meaning of hundreds of English language words without even knowing their exact meaning. Before we go further, let us answer some basic questions for you first.
Q. What is a root?
Ans: root is the part of the word which gives instructions to a word.
Q. How many parts is a word made of?
Ans: The word is made up of three parts.
- Prefix
- Root
- Suffix
For example - Transferable
Here 'Trans' is a prefix, 'Fer' is the root and 'able' is the suffix.
Note: PREFIX is a word, letter or number placed before another. SUFFIX is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
Root Word: Claim/Clam
Today we have taken 'Claim/Clam' as a ROOT which refers to the state or to assert something. It has the following meanings:
- Call Out
- Talk
- Speak
- Say
- Shout
Now with the help of this one root, you can come out with the conclusion of several other English words which are given as following -
1) Acclaim:
Pronunciation: (ah-kleym)
Meaning - to applaud, praise enthusiastically and publicly.
Usage - The popular writer has received international acclaim and several national awards for his work.
2) Clamour:
Pronunciation: (clam-our)
Meaning - a loud and confused noise, especially that of people shouting.
Usage - During the meeting, the disappointed workers will clamour for the resignation of the chief officer.
4) Declaim:
Pronunciation: (de-claim)
Meaning - To speak aloud with studied rhetorical force and expression; to make a speech on a set subject or theme as an exercise in public oratory or disputation.
Usage - The rebel tried to declaim his anger for the government, but was quickly arrested for his reckless speech.
5) Disclaim:
Pronunciation: (dis-kleym)
Meaning -Refuse to acknowledge; deny. To renounce, relinquish, or repudiate a legal claim.
Usage - Actor's spokesperson flatly disclaimed the marriage rumour circulating in the press.
6) Exclaim:
Pronunciation: (ik-skleym)
Meaning - To cry out suddenly and vehemently; to cry out from pain, anger, delight, surprise
Usage - The children exclaimed with wonder when they saw an elephant in their colony.
7) Irreclaimable:
Pronunciation: (ir-i-kley-muh-bull)
Meaning - That which cannot be reclaimed, reformed, or called back to right ways.
Usage - The loss of property in a natural disaster is irreclaimable.
8) Proclaim:
Pronunciation: (pro-claim)
Meaning - To make an official announcement of (something), by word of mouth in some public place
Usage - The President of the country proclaimed a national day of old people.
9) Reclamation: -
Pronunciation: (reclam-ashun)
Meaning - Make an effort to regain; demand the return of, the process of claiming something back or of reasserting a right.
Usage - The Indian tribe celebrated after the government ordered a reclamation that would give them back their ancestral lands.
10) Claimant:
Pronunciation: (kley-ment)
Meaning - One who makes or enters a claim; one who has a claim upon anything
Usage - The claimant wanted the postal service to reimburse her since the carrier lost the package.
