The First Chief Election Commissioner of India is Sukumar Sen. He was an Indian civil servant who worked from March 21, 1950, to December 19, 1958. Under his capable leadership, India successfully held its first two general elections after independence. Elections were held in 1951-52 and 1957.

Mr. Sukumar Sen, an Indian civil servant who held the position from 21st March 1950 to 19th December 1958, was India’s first Chief Election Commissioner. India’s Chief Election Commissioner is typically chosen from among members of the Indian Civil Service, and frequently from among members of the Indian Administrative Service.
Mr. Sukumar Sen has India’s first two successful general elections under his name. He played a crucial role in setting up India’s much-valued electoral system as it is today. On May 15, 2022, Shri Rajiv Kumar became India’s 25th Chief Election Commissioner.
