The British conquest of Bengal began with the Battle of Plassey in 1757. After establishing themselves as traders in India, the British wanted political control over the country. And this happened after they won control of Bengal. The Plassey (or Palashi) region of West Bengal, to the east of the Bhagirathi River, was the site of the 1757 Battle of Plassey.

The last independent Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah, and his French allies were confronted by troops of the British East India Company under the command of Robert Clive. This was called the Battle of Plassey which became a turning point in the history of Bengal and India.
