What is the Full Form of DGP?

The Full form of DGP is the Director General of Police. The final and highest rank in the police department is DGP. All DGPs are members of the Indian Police Service. Above the cross, sword, and baton is the national crest, which serves as the insignia of the Director General of Police.

A DGP is the highest-ranking police officer in the Indian states and union territories, with three stars. The Director General of Police is the full form of DGP. DGPs, also known as State Police Chiefs, are appointed by a cabinet made up of the state’s top officers and the Chief Minister.

  • There might also be additional DGP-level officers in the state.
  • Director General of Prisons, Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Director General of Fire Forces and Civil Defense, Police Housing Society, etc., are common positions for such officers.

Officers with the rank of DGP may also hold comparable positions in institutions of the central government, such as the DG of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Director of the SVPNPA, etc.

The DGPs are IPS officers who wear gorget patches on their collars. The gorget patches have a dark blue background and an oak leaf pattern. To become a DGP, one needs to clear the UPSC Exam. The DGP rank is the highest in the police force and can only be attained through various departmental positions.
