The right to vote and elect representatives was among the first rights granted to Indian citizens following independence.

A democracy provides ample opportunity for citizens to exercise their rights and freely participate in political decisions by electing candidates of their choice to power.
According to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, democracy is a government that is for the people, by the people, and of the people.
By this definition, he means that democracy is governance in which the people are superior. They have the right to vote for the person they believe will best serve their interests.
