Democracy in Modern India is a system of government in which the people have the power and freedom to express themselves. India has the world’s largest democracy. Following its independence in 1947, it was given the status of democracy. The people of India have several rights that can be used to their advantage when needed.

The right to vote and elect representatives was among the first rights granted to Indian citizens following independence.

  • A democracy provides ample opportunity for citizens to exercise their rights and freely participate in political decisions by electing candidates of their choice to power.
  • According to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, democracy is a government that is for the people, by the people, and of the people.
  • By this definition, he means that democracy is governance in which the people are superior. They have the right to vote for the person they believe will best serve their interests.

Principles of Democracy in Modern India

Modern-day Indian democracy works on certain principles such as:

  • Every citizen should be able to participate in national political decisions.
  • Every citizen is deserving and has unique abilities and potential.
  • Individuals must respect and follow the laws and regulations.
  • Everyone should respect the majority’s decisions.
  • Everyone works together to achieve a common goal.
  • Democracy is based on individual responsibility and opportunity.
