49th Parallel

The USA and Canada

Located 49 degrees north of the equator, the 49th parallel forms the international border between Canada and the Northern USA (except Alaska).

38th Parallel

South Korea and North Korea

The central part of the Demilitarized zone between South and North Korea is demarcated by the 38th parallel.

31st Parallel

Iraq and Iran

The border between Iran and Iraq is marked by the 31st Northern latitude. Along with this, it demarcates the border between Mississippi and Louisiana.

25th Parallel

Mali and Mauritania

The 25th parallel marks the northmost section of the Mauritania-Mali border.

22nd Parallel

Sudan and Eqypt

North and South Vietnam

Radcliffe Line

India and Pakistan

Sir Cyril Radcliffe demarcated the Radcliffe line to separate East and West Pakistan from India. At present, it includes Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Oder-Neisse Line

Germany and Poland

The Oder-Neisse Line is formed over the Lusatian and Oder rivers. It was formed in accordance with the Potsdam conference to separate Poland and Germany. But, later, in 1990, it was recognized by a unified Germany.

Mannerheim Line

Finland and Russia

The Mannerheim was formed by Finland as a defensive line during World war 2 against the Soviet Union for the Winter war.

Durand Line

Afghanistan and Pakistan

Sir Mortimer Durand delimited the line in 1893, with an agreement of the erstwhile amir of Afghanistan. Now, it is not recognised by present-day Afghanistan.

Hindenburg Line

Germany and Poland

During WW1, this boundary was used as the defensive line by German in the French territory. However, later in 1919, the boundary was considered irrelevant by the treaty of Versailles.

McMahon Line

India and China

McMahon line were drawn by Sir Henry McMahon in 1914 in consultation with representatives from Tibet. It is the de facto border tween the two countries.

49 Parallel Line between which Country

The border between the Canadian province of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia to the north and the United States states of Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Washington to the south. It is the longest undefended border in the World. It is 5525 miles long, situated 49 degrees north of the equator.

Maginot Line

Named after the French Minister of War, Andre Maginot, the Maginot Line was formed to separate France and Germany. The principal aim of designing the line was to prevent an invasion. The Maginot line was filled with dozens of underground bunkers, minefields, fortresses, etc. But, being impenetrable and immobile, it failed to protect France from the attack of Germans. After the German attack on France, the French army had to isolate the Maginot line, and it became of little military importance after the incident.

Durand Line

The international boundary line between Pakistan and Afghanistan in South Asia is Durand Line. The boundary was established as an international border between Afghanistan and British India in 1893 to fix the diplomatic relations and trade between them. But it has been controversial and conflicts for these countries since Pakistan’s independence. In 2011, in a conflict between the two countries, 500 Taliban militants entered the Upper Dir area from Afghanistan. As a result of this, these Tabilan militants killed 30 Pakistani soldiers.

Radcliffe Line – International Boundary between India and Pakistan

The Radcliffe Line is also known as the international boundary line between Pakistan and India. It spread through Gujarat to the J&K border. Created on August 17, 1947, it divides British India into 3 parts – India, West Pakistan, and East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). Additionally, the border line between India and Pakistan passes through Jammu and Kashmir region and is called the Line of Control or LOC.

McMahon Line – Boundary Line between India and China

The international boundary line between India and China is called the McMohan Line, which spreads across the eastern border of Bhutan to the Himalayas till it reaches the great bend in the Brahmaputra river. It is named after Sir Henry McMahon who was the foreign secretary in British India and signed the bilateral agreement between Tibet and Britain at a conference in Shimla on 3rd July 1914. The McMohan line between India and China is 890 km or 550 miles in length.

Line of Actual Control

Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the borderline between India and China which was actually a ceasefire line initially but later turned into a borderline. It separates the territories of China and India.

  • Most Lit-up International Boundary Line – As per NASA’s snapshot from the International Space Station, the most lit-up international boundary line is Radcliffe Line, i.e., the border between India and Pakistan.
