How Many Times did Ghazni Attack India?

Between 1000 and 1027 AD, Mahmud Ghazni attacked India 17 times. His campaigns were designed to steal money. Mahmud Ghazni, also referred to as Mahmud of Ghazni, ruled Ghazni from 971 to 1030 AD. So, in order to plunder India’s wealth, he began his first offense in 1001. He launched his 16th attack on the Somnath temple in 1025 specifically to take the treasure.

Mahmud of Ghazni began his invasion of India when the Rajput power was at its lowest point. Mahmud Ghazni’s two main motivations for conquering India were to first amass the enormous wealth that already existed in India and, second, to spread Islam. He also wished to make Ghazni, his capital city, a region of formidable power in the political landscape of all of Central Asia.

In 1000 AD, Mahmud of Ghazni launched his first assault on contemporary Pakistan and Afghanistan. He overthrew the Hindu emperor Jaya Pala, who eventually committed suicide and was replaced by his son Anandpala.

  • In 1015 AD, Kashmir was attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni.
