There are 28 states and 8 Union Territories after the abolition of Article 370. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is divided into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. There were 29 states in the past. Article 370 of the Indian Constitution grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir, a region in the north of the Indian subcontinent and a portion of the larger region of Kashmir that is under dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019, seeks to divide the state of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh, was introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah on August 5 in the Rajya Sabha. As a result, after the abrogation of Article 370, there are 8 union territories and 28 states.
