Union Territories are formed because they may be too different to merge with other territories and, therefore, may require administrative support. Apart from this, there are many reasons for the formation of Union Territories (UTs). India has 8 union territories: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. These small geographical areas are administered by the central government.

Formation of Union Territories

The existence of union territories has led many opponents to conclude that India is a quasi-federal country with federal and state governments, each with their own legislative areas. As a result of their formation and development, the Union Territories of India enjoy unique rights and status.

An Indian sub-jurisdiction may be given the designation of a Union Territory to protect the rights of indigenous cultures and to avoid political unrest over governance issues and other factors. In the future, these union territories may become states to improve administrative control.

Union Territories in India

Union Territories are unique areas that may differ from their surrounding states and regions. Here we have discussed why Indian union territories were formed:

  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep – for their strategic importance.
  • Delhi and Chandigarh – because they are political and administrative centers.
  • Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu – for their cultural distinction.
  • Jammu & Kashmir – because it is a politically unstable region.
  • Union territories are areas that are too unique (geographically, culturally, or economically) to be merged with the surrounding regions.
  • UT(s) may be too small to be completely independent on their own.
  • UT(s) may be financially weak to exist independently.
  • UT(s) may be politically unstable areas.
