How IES/ESE Cut Offs Are Determined By UPSC for Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test
- IES/ESE cut off for the preliminary qualifying exam will be 15% of the total marks, i.e. 75 out of 500 for the general and reserved category, while 10% for PH category candidates.
- Based on the cutoff score for ESE preliminary exam, UPSC shortlists candidates 6-7 times the total number of vacancies for the ESE mains examination.
- Candidates who appear for the mains exam will have to ensure at least 20% of the general, OBC, SC and ST categories, whereas PH candidates will obtain 10%.
- UPSC shortlist candidates twice the number of vacancies for the final stage, i.e. personality test/interview.
- The IES cutoff released by the Commission will be prepared based on marks secured by the least qualified candidate in the given stage following the selection criteria decided by the Commission.
ESE Cutoff Tie-Principles
Wherever two or more candidates secure equal aggregate marks in ESE, 2022, the ties have been resolved under the principles approved by the Commission, viz.
(i) The candidates with more marks in the total of three Engineering papers may be ranked higher;
(ii) In case the total marks of three Engineering papers are also equal, the candidates with more marks in the Personality Test
may be ranked higher;
(iii) In case the marks in the Personality Test are also equal, the candidate who is senior in age may be ranked higher.
What Factor Affect IES Cut off
Several factors determine the cutoff, such as:
- Number of candidates appearing for the exam
- Number of seats available
- Previous year cut off.
- Marking Scheme of the examination
- Level of difficulty of the examination
