Ocean is named after a country in the Indian Ocean which is named after India. The Indian Ocean consists of 19.8 percent of water and spans 70,560,000 km2 (27,240,000 sq mi) or 19.8 percent of the Earth’s surface.

The Indian Ocean has specific regional seas along with its core, such as the Somali Sea, Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the Laccadive Sea, and the Andaman Sea. As the Indian Ocean is triangular in shape in the north, it is surrounded by Asia, in the west by Africa, and in the east by the smallest continent Australia.
