Why is NLU Delhi not part of CLAT? Currently, India’s legal education is led by 23 National Law Universities (NLUs). National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi), NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, and GNLU Gandhinagar are just a few notable names.

22 NLUs are on one side because they administer a Common Law Admission Test, whereas the NLU Delhi is on the other side since it administers its own All India Law Entrance Test (AILET).

So, what distinguishes NLU Delhi from other NLUs? And, despite being an NLU, why isn’t NLU Delhi a member of the CLAT Consortium? Let’s look at how NLU Delhi differs from other NLUs, as well as how AILET differs from CLAT.

Objectives of the establishment (National Law University Delhi)

The NLU Delhi Act, approved by the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in 2008, founded the institution. The university’s main goal is to develop and deliver socially relevant, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary legal education. The university works to raise community legal knowledge and attain political, social, and economic justice.

Why is NLU Delhi not part of CLAT

  • The reason behind NLU Delhi’s exclusion from CLAT is straightforward. For admissions to BA LLB, LLM, and Ph.D. programs, NLUD has its own AILET.

  • You may be asking why, although NLU Delhi is a National Law University, it does not recognize CLAT scores. When all other NLUs and many other legal schools in India adopt CLAT for admissions, the question becomes even more pressing.

  • Dr. Ranbir Singh, the founder of NLU Delhi and a key figure in the development of CLAT, told Bar and Bench in 2012 that;

  • One of the reasons was that [NLU Delhi] would be CLAT’s 13th law school. As a result, I would be the 13th pick when students filled out their choices.

  • The VC also highlighted administrative and financial concerns as reasons for NLUD’s exclusion from CLAT.

  • Today, NLUD is one of India’s most prestigious law schools, ranked #2 in the NIRF rating of law schools in 2020. Not only that, but NLU Delhi has been at the top for the previous three to four years.

Success of AILET

In the first year of AILET, NLU Delhi received just 4000 applications. However, the quantity of AILET applications has gradually climbed since then. More than 18,000 students took the AILET at NLU Delhi last year (2019). The success of AILET is also one of the reasons why NLU Delhi wants to carve out a niche in the minds of law students.

CLAT v AILET

CLAT attracts around 65,000 applicants, whereas AILET attracts approximately 18,000 candidates. CLAT’s exam format has changed in 2019. It is now a comprehension-based test that assesses applicants’ reading and critical thinking abilities. AILET, on the other hand, is an objective type test that is used to assess applicants on a variety of topics. CLAT against AILET highlights is included here.
