What is GATE Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Syllabus?

Hydrodynamics

Kelvin's theorem and vorticity theorem,  Sources, Sinks, and Doublets, hydrodynamic forces in potential flow, D'Alembert's paradox, added-mass, slender-body theory, hydrodynamic model testing, scaling laws, application of potential theory to surface waves, energy transport, wave/body forces, linearised theory of lifting surfaces.

  • Ship Geometry and Physical Fundamentals: Archimedes' principle, ship buoyancy and weight, flotation rules, heel and trim, stable and unstable ship equilibrium, the relevance of streamlined hull design, ship major particulars, hydrostatic calculations.
  • Stability and Trim of Ships: Statical stability at small angles of heel, Inclining experiment.   • Ship Manoeuvring motions: Ship path keeping and changing, equations of motion, linearised equations and control fixed stability indexes, model tests, Stability and control in the horizontal and vertical planes- definitive maneuvers and sea trials. Rudder  Hydrodynamics, design, and functioning of a rudder, Influence of the propeller, hull, appendages, and other factors on rudder performance, Experimental methods for the determination of hydrodynamic derivatives. 
  • Ocean Waves: Regular, irregular, trochoidal. Wave spectrum, encounter frequency, Types of ship motions, coupled and non-coupled motions, equations of motion, Dynamic effects of ship motion in a seaway. 
  • Ship Structures & Strength: Loads operating on ships in the sea, concerns for longitudinal and transverse strength, and estimating methods hull girder strength, stiffened plate analysis, hull girder torsion, deformation and stresses, local strength analysis, hull girder reliability and ultimate strength, and ship structural and framing systems-bottom, side, deck, bulkhead, end structures, and structural connections Superstructure, hatch covers, machinery foundations, freight handling systems.

  • Marine Steam Turbines: Compounding, reheating, turbine building, rotors, blades, casing, Gland sealing, diaphragms, nozzles, bearings, and other topics, Gearings, lubrication systems, and expansion arrangements, Fundamentals of G.T, Marine Gas Turbines Gas turbine structure, gearing, operational characteristics, controls, and combined cycles, Electrical propulsion, nuclear propulsion– physical fundamentals of nuclear reactor operation- usage of nuclear propulsion on seagoing vessels.
