Answer: A. Connected to supply mains
Primary winding of a transformer is connected to supply mains.
Solution
A transformer is an electrostatic device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through a common magnetic field.
In a transformer, there are two coils or windings named as coil 1 and coil 2, and they are on a common magnetic core. When we apply an AC voltage source across coil 1, and a load across coil 2 of the transformer.
Coil 1 which receives energy from the AC supply is known as the primary winding of a transformer, and coil 2 which delivers energy to the load, is called as the secondary winding of a transformer.
And the bases of voltage levels transformers can be classified as
A Step-up transformer is the transformer in which the output voltage (or) secondary voltage is greater than the primary (or) supply voltage.
While in a step-down transformer primary voltage will be greater than secondary voltage.
So, transformer primary winding is that winding of transformer for which AC supply mains are connected and it will be either low (or) high voltage winding based on type of transformer. Hence, the primary winding of a transformer is connected to supply mains.
