A two-terminal variable resistor is known as a-

  1. Potentiometer
  2. Thermistor
  3. Rheostat
  4. Wipe

Answer: C. Rheostat

A two-terminal variable resistor is known as a rheostat.

Solution

Potentiometer: A potentiometer is an instrument designed to measure an unknown voltage by comparing it with a known voltage. It is a three-terminal device. Since a potentiometer measures voltage, it can also be used to determine the current simply by measuring the voltage drop produced by the unknown current passing through a known standard resistance.

Thermistor: The thermistor is a contraction of the term thermal resistors. These are generally composed of semiconductor materials. It is a two-terminal resistance, but it exhibits highly non-linear characteristics of resistance versus temperature. The order of resistance is 0.5 Ω to 0.75Ω.

Rheostat: The rheostat is a two-terminal variable resistance device. In addition to the two terminals, there is a wiper through which resistance is varied from minimum to maximum value.

Wiper: The wiper is a sliding contact.
