A Brief About Immersive Technology

Hi Gradians,

Immersive Technology as clear by its name, creates a sense of immersion i.e interaction with the physical world by a means of digital/simulated world by creating a sensory feeling. Immersive Technology is a combination of two things:

  • Virtual Reality
  • Augmented Reality

Virtual Reality: It is basically computer generated simulation of an environment or a 3-D image that can be interacted by a human using a glass, fitted with sensors.

Virtual Reality is experienced on a computer by two senses i.e sight and sound.

Augmented Reality: It superimpose a computer generated image on user's view of real world, hence providing a composite view.

What is the difference between Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality???

In Virtual Reality(V.R), the user insight is totally based on virtual information whereas in Augmented Reality(A.R) there is an additional computer generated information that improves the user perception of reality.

The several technologies that helps user to interact with the virtual environment are:

  1. Brain-Computer Interface: It is a path between enhanced brain and any external device. The information through it can flow in Bi-Directional manner.
  2. Gesture Recognition: This helps in recognizing human gestures or movements through mathematical algorithms.
  3. Omni-Directional Treadmill: It is a mechanical device same as treadmill that helps to perform locomotive motion in any sort of direction (360 degrees).
  4. Speech Recognition: It basically translates spoken language into text by computers.

Applications:

There are several applications of Immersive Technology like if a bulk of students needs to visit a factory that offers very high-tech machines and there are several restrictions on those like defence, aerospace etc then this will defer the quality of students as they are unable to visit due to lack of financial issues or several risks involved. Hence, this technology creates a good and efficient platform which will enable students to take a virtual tour and learn as many things as they can through this. This will also improvise there skills and talents as they will be grasp practical knowledge as well as actual scenerios of what actually is going on.

Right now, it is immensely used in Cannabis Industry because of its legalisation in several countries and it attracts several customers and investors.

Immersive Technology can be used in a variety of fields such as Retail and E-Commerce, arts, video-games, education, medicine etc.

Demerits of Immersive Technology:

On the other hand, there are several cons for this such as like what will happen if a person is not able to distinguish between real world and immersive world. This can be a matter of concern as this technology is getting intense and deep with the development of science and governments are unable to regulate this industry.
