First Women Graduate from Calcutta University?
Kadambini Ganguly was the first lady from Calcutta University to receive a BA degree during the reign of the Britishers. She became the first female practitioner of western medicine not just in India, but in the whole of South Asia. It was due to her lectures at Calcutta Medical College, that the college finally started giving admissions to female/women candidates.
Kadambini Ganguly was also the first female speaker at the Indian National Congress. She also organized the Women's Conference in Calcutta in 1906, after the Bengal Partition. Annie Besant, in her book 'How India Wrought For Freedom' hailed Kadambini as a symbol of upliftment of India's womanhood, during India's freedom struggle.
