When was the Project Tiger Started?

On 1st April 1973, the Government of India launched “Project Tiger” to promote the conservation of the tiger. Project Tiger is the largest species conservation initiative. Under the Wildlife protection act 1972, the Project Tiger was launched for the conservation of big cat tigers as the count was decreasing rapidly in India.

Interestingly the Bengal Tiger is India’s national animal, so to stop the decline in number and preserve the area of these cats the project was launched. Kailash Sankhala was the first director of the project.
