Who were the First Female Doctors in India?

The First Female Doctors in India were Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi and Kadambini Ganguly. Anandibai received her two-year diploma and is known for being the first woman to hold the presidency of the former Bombay and study western medicine in the United States. The biggest turning point in the life of Anandibai that urged her to become a physician was when her son died due to a lack of medicinal facilities.

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, known as India’s First Female Doctor, has inspired and motivated women of all ages to continue their education regardless of their circumstances. Anandi Gopal Joshi and Anandibai Joshi were other names for her. She was born on March 31, 1865, and raised in a Brahmin Marathi family. She is regarded as India’s First Lady Doctor.

Because of Indian customs, she was married at the age of nine to Gopalrao Joshi, a postal clerk. She was renamed ‘Anandi’ after her marriage. Her husband was a strong advocate for women’s education and encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

Anandibai gave birth to a baby boy at the age of 14, but the child died within 10 days due to medical negligence. Her loss inspired her to do something extraordinary: improve India’s healthcare quality. Hence, her story has inspired so many women to pursue their dreams of completing their educations and working towards social development. Moreover, many other female doctors followed suit after Anandibai which helped in the development of the medical field even more.
