Muhammad Ghori was killed by Prithviraj Chauhan near the Indus river on 15 March 1205. He was returning to Ghazni after his campaigns in India. He handed over all his affairs in India to the slave ruler Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who laid the foundation of the slave dynasty and eventually the Delhi Sultanate in India.

How Muhammad Ghori Died?

Popular folklore holds that it was Prithviraj Chauhan who killed him but there is no conclusion to support this claim. In fact, it was the Khokhar Jat or Nijari Ismaili who ordered his assassination.

Muhammad Ghori is known to have laid the foundation stone of Islamic rule in India as his conquest followed the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate under Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Das dynasty.

  • He was originally a ruler of the Ghurid dynasty and an ambitious ruler who dreamed of its expansion.
  • He successfully defeated the Rajput confederacy led by Prithviraj Chauhan in the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192 and established Islamic rule in India.
